The first day of MWC 2025 opened with important groundwork for the Greece–Spain Innovation Alliance, starting with a working visit to the Pavilion of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
The visit focused on Catalonia’s Artificial Intelligence Strategy, a clear demonstration of the region’s commitment to scientific excellence, digital transformation, and technology-driven economic growth. The pavilion highlighted key achievements, including:
488 active AI companies, nearly triple the number from 2019
44% of these companies are start-ups, driving innovation from the ground up
Over 14,500 employees working directly in the AI sector
AI contributing 2.155 billion euros to Catalonia’s economy, representing 0.8% of regional GDP
With AI touching everything from public administration to smart infrastructure and sustainability, Catalonia’s approach offers valuable insights and inspiration for cross-border collaboration between Greece and Spain under the Innovation Alliance framework.
This visit also served as important preparatory work ahead of tomorrow’s ministerial-level meeting between Greek and Spanish officials, where topics like digital governance, AI policy coordination, and technology partnerships will take center stage.
A highlight of the day was the informal meeting between Michael Kokkinos, President of the Hellenic-Spanish Chamber of Commerce, and Mr. Óscar López Águeda, Minister of Digital Transformation and Civil Service of Spain. . This encounter provided an early opportunity to align perspectives and reinforce the Chamber’s ongoing role as a bridge between business, government, and technology communities across both countries.

With this strong foundation, the Innovation Alliance moves into Day 2 ready for deeper discussions and concrete steps toward a shared digital future for Greece and Spain — and for a more innovative Europe.
